Falcons paid too much for Jones

There were reaches everywhere in the first round, and none more than Tennessee with Jake Locker at the eighth position. OK, Minnesota with Christian Ponder at the 12th spot was a shocker, too. But what about the Atlanta Falcons?

It's not that I don't like Julio Jones at the sixth spot. I do. But not at the price it cost the Falcons to get him. Jones will touch the ball... what? Six, seven times a game? The Falcons paid too much to upgrade the Michael Jenkins position, and I just wonder if it was worth it. No, I don't. It wasn't.

Look, I trust GM Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith. They reconstructed the Falcons after the Michael Vick debacle, and they did it almost overnight. But the last time I checked it wasn't their offense that cost them a playoff game to Green Bay. It was their defense. It couldn't stop anyone.

If I'm surrendering as much as the Falcons did, I'd rather have someone who's going to be on the field 75 percent of the time instead of someone who will make a half dozen plays. I'd rather have a defensive starter.

Falcons paid too much for Jones

Last I checked, the Titans were having a wonderful draft.  This guy is gonna be the next Philip Rivers...guaranteed!  Not having a wonderful draft are the Falcons.  Not to sound like Yoda, but someone with some common sense, I'll say that the Falcons gave away the whole future of their team in an attempt to recreate the 2008 New England Patriots!  it won't work, and depending on their schedule, they may choke...horribly.  The Saints deserve this, and I love what they're doing in the draft, but they're putting alot of pressure on Drew Brees.  Is their WR core really good enough, or are they set to change their identity by just running the ball and playing D.  When you look at how good the Atlanta-New Orleans games were last year, maybe the Saints could just scrap more, and pass less from now on.  Cleveland seems to be taking a lot of low-profile players.  Maybe they're playing it safe, but they now have alot of picks to play with.  Bent Atlanta over, they have.  Use the Force, they must!

Falcons paid too much for Jones

I don't understand why every one thinks the locker pick at 8 was a reach. If he would have come out last year he was projected as a top 5 pick. He had a rocky senior year because he had no help on the team. he got washington to a bowl game and won the rematch with a nebraska team that they lost to by over 30 points in the regular season. he's less of a reach at 8 than newton is at 1.
And yes the falcons paid too much for jones. However, as a saints fan i was glad to see them do it.

While it may not be a *reach*, I still think it was a bigger shocker for the Falcons to take Jones than for the Titans to take Locker. People question Locker's accuracy, but I saw an 8-minute long video of just *Senior* year highlights full of him making reads, aiming for receivers 30, 40, 50 yards down the field, and putting the ball right in their breadbasket. Further, they really needed a QB. The Falcons have a very good QB with very good receivers. Why trade away two big picks this year and almost half your draft next year for another WR? I don't get it.

The falcons did pay too much.  I won't complain as a Browns fan but as the point has already been made to upgrade your second wide reciever position.  Just last year we saw Mike Williams out of Syracuse go later than names like Demariyus Thomas, Dez Bryant, and Golden Tate.  These guys could rebound no doubt especially Bryant who  was injured after a spectatcular mid season run.
