Asomugha not high on Eagles' wish list

When the NFL lifts its lockout, one of the first free agents off the shelf will be Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha -- with the expectation that the Philadelphia Eagles are first in line.

Or maybe not.

There's no question that Asomugha will be a hot property. He's one of the game's elite defenders, so proficient that once he hits the free-agent market a bidding frenzy should erupt. But don't expect the Eagles to join the charge. I don't. And neither do others who are close to the organization.

They tell me there is an indifference toward Asomughha, mostly because he will cost a fortune but partly because he's a press cornerback who plays only the right-cornerback position. I know, I know, the Eagles need another cornerback like L.A. needs Sig-Alerts, and they could especially use one at the right-cornerback spot. But I've heard too many people say the Eagles aren't all that jacked up about Asomugha not to pay attention.

Another factor may be age, even though Asomugha turns 30 next month. That puts him in the prime of his career, but check the history of the Eagles. They rarely, if ever, sign or re-sign players 30 or older to long-term contracts. They let Brian Westbrook walk. They let Brian Dawkins and Troy Vincent walk. They traded away Donovan McNabb. All not only were accomplished starters; they were members of the Eagles' 75th anniversary team, too. But they were also 30 or older.

The point is: The Eagles could've re-signed them to long-term deals but did not, and I suggest they did not because there's a philosophy that cautions against signing descending players to extended contracts.

Now let's get something straight: I'm not saying Asomugha is a descending player. Heck, he was an All-Pro last season and is respected so much throughout the league that he was the least targeted cornerback in the NFL the last two seasons. Nevertheless, there seems to be a reluctance within the Eagles to move on the guy when he's available. From what I gather, the Eagles respect and admire Asomugha; they just don't think he's the right guy for them.

@DeathSquadInc you are simply one of the most uneducated people to ever comment on a sports site. the 49ers have about 4 good players on their team and they are, willis, v. davis, gore, and crabtree.  the eagles on the other hand have way more than jackson and samuel, in fact their best reciever isnt even jackson its maclin. they had the second best offense in the nfl due to players like brent celek, lesean mccoy, jason avant, oh yeah and something your team doesnt have, a GREAT starting qb in mike vick. on the defense they have the premier d end in the nfc in trent cole, outside of peppers, and statistically samuel had a better season then both asomugha and revis. so when you want to learn a little about sports come back and comment. oh and more thing i bet you dont win your division this year.

Bring on the hate. It's amazing. I stat true facts about the 49ers only to get assaulted, by low and behold a Philly fan. If you don't like what I say go to ESPN or Fox Sports, don't continue to bash someone and call them names. Did your parents not teach you matters or hug you enough? Why don't you talk after you win something, and not get blown out four times in the NFC Championship game.  The City Of Philly is filled with murders, child rapist, pimps, hookers, you would know,  it basically a worthless crap hole, that nobody would miss if it was struck by a nuke. I'm ruining the site by stating true facts? Go look in the mirror...

What's also funny is how the 49ers collapsed after their front office/team was exposed as being funded by the mob. After they lost that backing they fell off never to be heard from again. They might as well try to trade for Kevin Kolb or even sign Rex Grossman, because anything is better than Alex Smith!

DBowman, I just want to congratulate you on your excellent response, however it seems you wasted your time because unless you say, "Oh my God I can't believe how dumb I have been I am just a giant tool hater I am so sorry the Niners ARE awesome!", if you don't say that DeathSquadInc won't hear you.  A tool is a tool is a tool, and that guy is Home Depot's entire tool coral all by himself.  By the way no one should be able to claim 90 year old Takeo Spikes as one of their teams premium players in their defense of anything, and Alex Smith?  Some one is kidding themselves with talking up Alex Smith.  Crabtree said it best, "oh?  is he our quaterback?"  And I didn't hear anyone make a homophobic slur against San Fran till the San Fran fan brought it up, maybe he tipped his hand there a little bit, not that there is anything wrong with that.  DeathSquadInc, go to a therapist to work out your issues, YOU are the kind of guy dragging the CBS world down.
