Gotta love Falcons' move for Tony G.

The way I look at the Tony Gonzalez deal is that it's a victory for both sides -- with Atlanta ahead on the count. Gonzalez wasn't happy in Kansas City and wanted out. That wasn't a secret. So the Chiefs get a second-rounder in next year's draft from Atlanta, and considering that Gonzalez is 33, unhappy and approaching the downside of his career I think that's fair compensation for Kansas City.

Yeah, I know he's one of the best in the game but he soon becomes a descending player, and the Chiefs peddled him while he still has value. That was smart. Years ago Bobby Beathard used to say the key to running a successful team was to identify the veterans who started to slip, then deal them while you could and turn the draft picks you acquired into young replacements. The Chiefs did that ... except that Gonzalez's numbers last year don't indicate he's slipping. He had one of his best seasons ever.

But he wanted out, and GM Scott Pioli apparently decided the Chiefs are better without him. Whatever. As far as the Falcons go, he fills a void and is a perfect teammate for a young quarterback like Matt Ryan. Someone suggested this might be another Jason Taylor deal waiting to happen, and it could. But if I'm Atlanta I'll take that chance. Gonzalez had 96 catches last year and scored 10 touchdowns, for crying out loud. The Falcons got absolutely nothing out of their tight ends a year ago. They will now. Smart, smart move by the Falcons.
